Narcotics not only can be avoided but SHOULD be avoided
New long-acting local anesthetics and evolving procedural technologies have made the recovery from plastic surgery more comfortable than in the past for patients- all without the use of narcotics.
Eliminating narcotic use after surgery begins by utilizing non-narcotic medications prior to surgery. These include special anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the sensation of throbbing and aching, medication to reduce nerve sensitivity, and a pill to reduce the risk of nausea. During surgery, long-acting local anesthetics are injected in the surgical site. These non-opioid drugs slowly release gradually over the next two to three days, giving you the recovery time you need without pain. By the time the drugs are fully released, you’re well on your way to be able to deal with any residual discomfort. After surgery, we also add muscle relaxants, when appropriate, to deal with any spasm that may add discomfort.
Patients are experiencing a quicker recovery and these medications work together in a way that equal, and frequently exceed, the analgesia we used to obtain with narcotic-based protocols. Additionally, narcotic-related side effects can be eliminated including: sedation, nausea, constipation, and confusion, thereby allowing patients to resume activities within hours, not days.
Since introducing and refining this protocol, most patients require only over-the-counter Tylenol and never take narcotics. On the rare occasions that these aren’t sufficient to control a patient’s pain, he prescribes non-narcotic pain relievers for a couple of days.
Types of Narcotics-Free Plastic Surgeries
Nearly every plastic surgery where there is an incision may be performed narcotics-free. This includes, but not limited to:
All breast procedures: Augmentation, Reduction, Lift, Reconstruction
Brazilian Butt Lifts
Arm and Thigh Lifts
Male Breast Reduction
Regardless of your procedure, your body needs time to recover. That time varies with the procedure, and it’s important to remember that different people heal at different rates. In general, expect the following:
a few hours of grogginess immediately after surgery.
incisions from surgery.
some swelling, tenderness and/or bruising around the site.
You’ll need to reduce your activities and daily life movements for a few days or weeks depending on the procedure performed. Dr. Iteld and his team will guide you through the recovery process and get you back to normal activity as soon as possible.
