upper arm - checking flab

More frequently than ever before, patients want to do something about upper arm wobble. You know what I’m talking about, right? Those floppy “batwings” that exercise doesn’t seem to tighten or fix. Maybe they have always been there; or you’ve lost a lot of weight and they have become more pronounced; or maybe they have gotten worse with age. No matter the reason, if this is something that bothers you, please know you are not alone.

American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics from 2015 show demand for the surgical batwing solution rose 929.7% in the last two decades, nearly 26,000 upper arm lifts were performed in 2015, compared to 2,516 in 1997.

American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics report that there was a nearly 5,000% change in the number of upper arm lifts in just a five year period, 17,099 in 2015 versus 338 in 2000.

You have a range of options

Treatments for addressing the under arm wobble range from surgical to nonsurgical options.

Liposuction: If you have excessive subcutaneous fat that is resistant to diet and exercise, you may be a good candidate for lipo as a solution to upper arm wobble.

Surgical: Brachioplasty or arm lift surgery may be right for you if the underside of your upper arms are sagging or appear loose and full due to excess skin and fat. This surgical procedure:

  • reduces excess sagging skin that droops downward
  • tightens and smoothes the underlying supportive tissue that defines the shape of the upper arm
  • reduces localized pockets of fat in the upper arm region

CoolSculpting: Want a nonsurgical option? Consider CoolSculpting to lose the wobble. This is a great option for some (but not all) patients. Remember that CoolSculpting gets rid of fat, but it won’t do much to tighten the skin. Therefore, it may be very effective at sculpting your arms if:

  • there is pinchable fat that will fit into the applicator
  •  the arm skin has good elasticity
