What causes Cellulite?

Cellulite’s signature dimples have three main causes: over time, skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension. It is a very common, harmless skin condition that affects women more than men due to the different fat, muscle, and connective tissue distribution. In varying degrees, it’s thought to affect 80 – 90 percent of women.

What is QWO?

QWO is the first and only FDA-approved injectable for moderate to severe cellulite in adult women’s buttocks. It is a prescription medicine that breaks up collagen and encourages the growth of healthy tissue. QWO was studied on all skin types and ethnicities, making it the right treatment for many of my patients. It’s important to note that QWO is indicated for cellulite – not laxity.

How does QWO work?

QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases and are believed to target the structural causes under your skin where cellulite starts. It’s thought that QWO works by releasing the fibrous bands, redistributing fat cells, and stimulating the growth of new collagen.

How is it given?

I inject QWO directly into targeted cellulite dimples using a small needle. At each office visit, injections take as little as 10 minutes. Ideally, most patients will receive three treatments spaced three weeks apart.

Please note: You should not receive QWO if you are allergic to any collagenase or any other ingredients in it, or have an active infection in the treatment area.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effects of QWO include: injection site bruising, pain, areas of hardness, itching, redness, discoloration, swelling, and warmth in the treatment area. In clinical trials, women required no post-treatment downtime. Most bruising lessened after each treatment and resolved in less than 21 days.

Serious side effects include allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions, including anaphylaxis, and injection site bruising.
