Replace Lost Collagen at Chicago’s Iteld Plastic Surgery

Imagine a freshly laundered, tightly fitted bedsheet spread out on a new mattress. It looks clean, smooth, and inviting, right? Now picture this same scene years later: The material may not be so elastic anymore, allowing it to bunch up and wrinkle, especially in places where the filling in the mattress underneath has shifted or been lost. Here’s the surprise twist: The bedsheet is the skin on your face! Fixing the sheet problem may require buying a new mattress and set of linens, but addressing signs of aging can be as simple as choosing dermal fillers at Chicago’s Iteld Plastic Surgery.

Loss of subcutaneous fat and collagen over time can lead to changing facial contours and the formation of what are known as “static wrinkles.” You may know them as nasolabial folds, “parenthesis,” or annoying reminders that you are no longer in your 20s. Adding volume back into the skin via dermal fillers can smooth them out again, rather like re-stuffing a mattress … actually, we’re going to just stop this imagination exercise and move on.

How Dermal Fillers Work

There are several major brands of dermal fillers, each with a unique formulation that sets it apart from the others. That said, all of the dermal fillers work off of the same idea: A small amount of gel, injected with care in small amounts, can address age-related changes in the skin.

The Juvederm® and Restylane® families of fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar found in our skin that binds to water and keeps our tissues plump. These options focus on static wrinkles, especially nasolabial folds and marionette lines. They can also plump up thin lips for a more luscious smile (or pout, depending on your mood).

Voluma®, a filler in the Juvederm® family, serves to bring volume back to the midface, in what are known as the “apples” of the cheeks. Injections here can create a youthful roundness in the place of hollows, as well as subtly lift skin that sagged to create jowls farther down.

Sculptra® has a poly-L-lactic acid base, which not only adds volume, but stimulates new collagen production for a lasting youthful look.

Which is best for you? Dr. Iteld doesn’t expect you to come equipped with answers. As long as you can describe what you want the end result to be, he and his nurse injector, Desirée Martinez, can choose the ideal dermal fillers for your specific case.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

Any injection can result in an initial reaction, with side effects ranging from tenderness and discomfort to redness or bruising. These are totally natural and should last no longer than a few days.

Since dermal fillers add physical volume where injected, the cosmetic effects will be noticeable right away. How is that for immediate gratification! Dermal fillers that stimulate collagen production will provide further results as time goes by.

Depending on the injectable, the effects can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. If you notice the volume starting to diminish once again, you can schedule another session at Iteld Plastic Surgery.

A good candidate for dermal fillers is just about anyone who has started to notice signs of aging due to changes in the skin. Patients should be healthy and understand what injectables will and won’t do for their appearance. Beyond that, good candidates should be those who like treatment sessions that do not take long (roughly the time of a lunch appointment), that do not require recovery or recuperation afterward, and that result in long-lasting, positive changes to the face.

Unfortunately, static wrinkles are not the only lines that can form on your face. Their counterpart, “dynamic wrinkles,” look similar, but have a different source: muscle activity. To smooth out these unwanted lines, Dr. Iteld uses BOTOX®, and Daxxify which relax the muscles beneath the skin instead of adding volume to the skin. Patients looking for a one-two punch to knock out signs of aging on the face can combine the effects of both injectables.
