Gynecomastia is a condition caused by enlarged glandular tissues and/or fat deposits in the breast area. Men with this condition suffer many physical, as well as psychological hurdles when they have this condition.

Given its cause and location, you have options on how to deal with it. For example, you could work out and hope that regular exercise may provide some success in reducing the size of your “man boobs.” If you aren’t ready for surgery, you might want to consider CoolSculpting, which will reduce the fat deposits. But, if the cause of your gynecomastia is glandular, neither exercise nor CoolSculpting will solve the problem.

Let’s Talk Surgery

If you still haven’t achieved your desired esthetics, gynecomastia surgery may be the right solution for you. That’s because the most effective approach for male breast reduction involves surgically removing the excess breast tissue and fat. And, just like any other surgical procedure, there are pros and cons.

Pros of Gynecomastia Surgery

In reducing the size and reshaping a man’s chest, the biggest advantage is to provide my patient with a flat and better-defined, muscular chest.

  • Better-defined, more muscular chest: By surgically removing the excessive tissue, and using various techniques for reducing the fatty tissue, including liposuction, I can create a better-shaped chest.
  • Contour to a masculine esthetic: Breast male reduction surgery allows for sculpting the patient’s upper body and, thereby, creating a more defined male physique.
  • Reduced overall discomfort: Many men complain about skin irritation, as well as tenderness. Surgery helps reduce these problems.
  • Increase self-esteem: It’s hard to think positively about yourself when your body doesn’t match who you are and when you’ve been teased or bullied. Gynecomastia surgery helps men change that. You’ll look on the outside the way you think about yourself on the inside. And the world will see you as a more confident you.

Cons of Gynecomastia Surgery

As with any surgery, there are a few disadvantages you should consider before you opt for this or any surgical treatment. The decision to have plastic surgery is extremely personal, and I want you to be aware of not just the positive benefits, but also the potential downside and see if this is the right decision for you.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, some of the risks include:

  • Surgical considerations: Some problems are rare but may include reactions to tape, suture materials, glues; topical preparations or injected agents; anesthesia risks; and bleeding or blood clots.
  • Visual issues: Surgery involves incisions and sutures. Sometimes breast asymmetry or breast contour and shape irregularities can occur. This may require the possibility of revision surgery.
  • Post-surgical issues: Persistent pain, Infection, and poor wound healing may occur. Keep in mind that, as with all surgeries, this may leave noticeable scars, as well as permanent pigment changes. Some patients also have changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent.
