Fillers: How long will they last?

Dermal fillers are very popular for adding volume, softening the appearance of wrinkles, and rejuvenating your look. Many of our patients love fillers, but ask the same question about them: How long will dermal fillers last? It’s important to keep in mind that dermal fillers are not permanent; they dissolve over time. Some dermal fillers can last for six to twelve months; others can last for several years. Most dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a natural compound that aids in the production of collagen and elastin. Let’s look at the various areas where we use fillers and how long they last in each area.

Where to use fillers

Lips & Mouth

The lips and around the mouth are the most popular places for dermal fillers. Want full lips? Filler can do the trick. Hate those marionette lines on either side of your nose leading down to your mouth? Have wrinkles and lines around your mouth? Depending on which filler is used, you can expect a more youthful volume while fading wrinkles that last about 12 months.

Eyes

We use fillers containing hyaluronic acid, such as Restylane and Juvéderm, to treat the tear trough area. These brighten the area under the eyes by “filling in” deep hollows that cast dark shadows. Lasts for 9 – 12 months.

Cheeks

Lift and contour your cheeks with dermal filler. By injecting it under your skin layer, fillers can correct age-related volume loss, as well as smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. You may want a touch up 6 months – 2 years to maintain the fuller look.

Chin

Several injectable fillers can enhance and reshape your jawline. These dermal fillers sculpt the face and showcase the natural beauty of your features. They can help create a well-defined profile by enhancing the size of your chin. Results typically last 12 – 24 months. Touch-up treatments may be necessary to maintain your new profile.

Nose

Don’t like your nose but aren’t ready for Rhinoplasty or aren’t sure exactly what you want? A non-surgical nose job may work for you. We do this using dermal filler to temporarily change the shape of your nose. The effects typically last 12 months. So, you may want to schedule a touch-up appointment at 9 months to maintain your new look.

Don’t like the filler results?

If you’re not completely happy, or on the off chance you’ve had some filler migrate where you don’t want it, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be partially or completely removed. We do this by injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler.

Making your fillers last longer

How long your fillers last depends on the location and types of filler used. Some dermal fillers have firmer, thicker materials; others have a thin and flexible consistency. Regardless, as your body metabolizes the fillers, they seem to “disappear.”
