Surprising to some people, breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is considered one of the highest-rated and most often recommended plastic surgery procedures. The reason is simple: Women who undergo this procedure benefit from improving their appearance while relieving the physical and emotional burden of overly large breasts.

Why women want a breast reduction

The most common reasons women come to me, discuss their issues, and then undergo breast reduction surgery include:

  • neck and shoulder pain, which often causes tension headaches
  • lower back pain
  • difficulty doing their favorite exercises
  • limited clothing and bra options
  • breast weight causing posture and skeletal issues
  • skin rashes and bra strap grooves

Women often find that having overly large breasts creates negative social effects as well. It’s true. They report people stare and even comment inappropriately, which causes them discomfort and anxiety.

Pros and Cons

As with any procedure, there are always pros and cons. You should consider both before choosing to undergo surgery. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, here are positive reasons and drawbacks to having breast reduction:

Pros: Breasts will be in better proportion to the rest of the body and will feel firmer. Surgery may alleviate neck, back, and shoulder pain and make it easier to breathe and exercise. And, from an aesthetic standpoint, clothes will fit better and help women feel more confident about their appearance.

Cons: But there are negatives to take into consideration as well. You may have decreased sensation in some areas, including the nipples and areolas. Some women complain that their breasts and nipples look slightly uneven. And, breast-feeding may be a problem.

What is involved in Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery involves my removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. I brought down the skin that was located above the nipple to reshape the breast. I’ll also shift the nipple and areola to a higher position. For women who have large areolas, I reduce the size to make them proportional to the new breast size.

As with other breast procedures, reduction surgery is ideal for my narcotics-free strategies, which means your pain should be well managed with just Tylenol®. You’ll be able to have a smooth recovery without turning to opioids.
