According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, in 2020, blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, was the second most popular plastic surgery procedure — 325,112 performed. More than half the patients nationwide were over 55 years of age, and the vast majority (86%) were women. Wondering why? Let’s look at what it is and what it treats.

Why Eyelid Surgery

As you age, your eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under your eyes. For some patients, their eyelids have become so heavy, they cause vision problems. For others, it’s an aesthetic issue. Regardless of your reason, eyelid surgery rejuvenates the area surrounding your eyes.

What is Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyelids, giving the upper face a refreshed and younger look. Some patients have me perform it on their upper or lower lids only; for others, I perform the surgery on both upper and lower lids. It repairs droopy eyelids by removing excess skin and, in some circumstances, muscle and fat. Blepharoplasty helps make your eyes appear younger and more alert. Blepharoplasty can help eliminate:

  • Baggy or droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess skin of the upper eyelids that interferes with peripheral vision
  • Fatty deposits appear as puffiness
  • Drooping lower eyelids revealing white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid
  • Bags under your eyes

How is it performed

Under general anesthesia, I make incisions in the natural eye creases to avoid visible scars. Then I remove excess skin, muscle, and fat, as needed. When necessary, I reposition the muscles under the eyelids. The goal is to give you a natural, refreshed appearance; not pulled or artificially wild-eyed. Following surgery, your eyelids might feel tight, and you may have some swelling and bruising. Cold packs and acetaminophen will help with any discomfort. You’ll need to have your sutures removed a week after your procedure.
